Pickleball is fast becoming the sport o n everyone’s mind. However, there is a distinct difference between the strategy for a doubles and singles game of Pickleball. This article will give you some insight into how the strategy between doubles and singles for Pickleball are different. Whether you’re playing doubles or singles, the main objective in Pickleball is to win. For those new to Pickleball, they may think this is impossible, as this game is very fast and hard to predict. However, with experience comes the ability to read your opponent, and the ability to outplay your opponent in Double‒or Single game.

In singles, the key is to be as quick as possible between shots. This will give you more time for decisions on shots. In doubles, the strategy is a bit different. Because there are two people on the court, you have two choices on all shots. In singles, you only have one shot when you get to the T. In couples play, you still have multiple shots.

Serving

Think back to your elementary school days. You were probably good at a number of things, but were you good at everything? Maybe you were the math whiz, but couldn’t jump very high. Or maybe you were good at recess sports but couldn’t draw for the life of you.

This is where serving to the middle comes in.

If you’re familiar with tennis or badminton, you’re set up for success when picking up the paddle. Racquet sports are all about swinging from an open stance. This is a great way to build speed and accuracy, especially when performing wide-arching swings like in tennis.

However, there’s a reason why most other racquet sports are played with a closed stance: closer to one’s body, lower risk of hitting others with a wild swing. Wider swings are harder to control, and racquet sports are all about control.

Serving to the middle can be a great way to take advantage of both these methods. Because of the closed stance, you’re guaranteed to have less of a risk of hitting others while you do a wide swing. Because you’re closing the angle between you and your opponent, you can probably push harder into the ball and create more movement.

Return

The serve is one of the trickiest shots in pickleball. And it’s easy to see why. You’re trying to hit the ball against a tiny wall, and the ball is moving at a fast clip. You not only need to strike the ball on the correct side of the court, but you’re also at a bad angle because the ball rises as it nears the pickle ball wall and wall. Hitting the ball with enough force will make the ball go over the top of the pickle ball wall, but it also requires a great deal of force. Hitting the ball too softly, however, will allow your opponent to return the ball.

Third shot

The benefit of the forward position is that it has a slight defensive aspect. However, positioning too far forward gives the opponent an easy opportunity to take a low power stroke that can result in an extra-point knockout.

The other mistake many players make is propelling the ball too fast. A lot of pressure is put on the return stroke, and if you return the ball too hard, you may get a lucky knockout.

If you throw the ball too fast and hard, you take some of the fun out of the game. There’s something exhilarating in the act of watching the ball reach the end of the table and come down slowly.

One of the first and best skills to learn is to master the powers and the speed of the ball. A properly thrown shot will glide smoothly across the table and land closer to the back. Boosting toward the back of the court is the key to winning many of the games.

Shot variance

Is a significant part of pickleball strategy for beginners. You can attempt to ensure the safety of your hit by using this strategy. Variance can be achieved by getting the ball to bounce in other areas of the court rather than in front of the net or in the center. This will enable you to get the ball to your opponent’s side.

Metric Shot Variance Rules

These two strategies are used when you are aiming to get your ball to the sidelines. The first option is used to make a shot in the opposite direction of the ball on the other side. The rule you must follow is to make your shot from the side you are throwing from. So if you are on the right side, you will have to make your shot with the right hand.

The second option is to make the shot from the same side of the court. This shot is made when you are attempting to get sound from the space between the middle and the edge of the court. The rule for this shot is the same.

Approaching the net

When approaching a net in a singles game, you may be confused about the strategy for success. When you approach the net, your goal is to put the ball in a place that will make it more difficult for your opponent to return. You never want to give your opponent a low cross court or deep down the line serve/hit.

A deep serve that lands just outside the left side of the court is a good choice. A cross court serve that lands on the other side of the net from your opponent is another good option. The third best choice is a wide serve, which typically lands on the right side of the court, but away from your opponent.

The strategy for your opponent should be dependent on whether you’re right-handed or left-handed, but most players will attempt to hit to the left (if they’re right-handed) side of the court. That way if you return in the same direction, which is likely (considering you want to return to the opposite side of the court as your opponent), you’ll be hitting the ball toward yourself.

One of the most common pickleball strategies is a doubles strategy. In doubles, you can serve, spike, hit, or block with both arms. In singles, you can only use one side of your body at a time. However, singles is highly strategic, because you need to play offense and defense simultaneously; you need to be able to hit a spike and then block the return.

When to play doubles and singles depends on the level of the players. It also depends on whether you’re playing on a court indoors or outdoors. There’s less margin for error when there are walls and other obstacles on the court, so it’s harder to coordinate your movements with a partner and harder to see your opponent. On a spacious court, there’s more space for you to move around, so you don’t have to worry about as many obstacles. However, it’s harder to miss your mark because you have more options.

Returning shot

When you return the ball, the ball should be moving slowly enough that you can catch it comfortably. The idea is to just let it bounce once. There are a few simple solutions to this shot:

First, get your paddle head at an angle of about 45 degrees to the target. This will allow you to steer the ball to the target regardless of the angle of the ball.

Second, you can grip your rubber on the extreme sides of your paddle, keeping the paddle head facing the target at all times. While this may be tricky at first, it’s a fantastic strategy once you get the hang of it.

And finally, you can always flip your paddle in your hand to the opposite side of your non-dominant hand, with your paddle head still facing the target. This is another great, and probably more common, strategy for the fourth shot.

As you get more experienced with pickleball, the above strategies will come to you naturally.

Fifth shot and onward

After serving, the players will position themselves at the end of their serve line (usually a designated spot outside the court), and the returning player stands at the opposite end of the serving line. This position is important, because the returning player will always begin returning shots by hitting toward the serving line.

The first shot of a game is usually a serve, and the players serve alternately until the end of the game. Games are played to 21 points, and a player must win by two points. If the score reaches 21-to-21, the game goes into overtime. In overtime, the first player to score wins.

The winner of the previous game serves first, and the first hit of the new game is usually a serve by the winner of the previous game. Games are played to 11 points with the winner of the previous game serving first.

A game is won by the player or doubles team who is serving. Once the ball is hit off the court or out of bounds, the service changes hands. Any shot that is made off the opponent’s side of the table does not count for scoring purposes.

If a player fails to return the ball in the correct order or fails to return the ball at all, the other player will hit a point. Each point is equal to one serve. A match consists of only one game unless special rules give the winner of the match two or three games.

Intelligent positioning

Keep in mind that you can hit your opponent off the court: you can hit over the net, under the net, or beside either sidewall. In terms of positioning, this is a significant advantage, because the best shots are generally not straight up the middle. Look for ways that you can upset your opponent’s movement and devise a strategy that capitalizes on that.

First, this means positioning yourself in a way that will force your opponent to hit the ball away from the center of the court. For example, if you’ve set up a game where you’re the server and have decided to handle the ball (see below), you should position yourself where you can realistically avoid having to return the ball back to the opponent. Otherwise, you risk being out of position, which can weaken your shot.

If you are back, make slow shots

When you are back on the court, making defensive shots becomes your goal. You should be aiming for your opponent’s racquet and not the front wall. Anything that you can hit to the back wall will stop any advancing balls and give you more time to set up a return shot.

If you have never played before and are back on the court, there are two ways to stop your opponent’s progress towards your side. Rushing shots – hitting as many balls as you can to the back wall in order to get your opponent to rush the shot or time-outs – hitting a ball high to the back wall in order to force your opponent to step out of the court for a short break.

If the opponents are back, keep them back

Paddle across the ball to keep it back in the back corners. These are the best spots to create a chance for side-outs. A side-out is when you hit the ball so hard that it hits the back wall and falls into your court, turning the tide in your favor. A strong side-out chance is a good thing.

Bonus tip: identify your opponents’ weaknesses

If you are just starting to play, you will undoubtedly fall victim to an extremely skilled player or two. If you find yourself losing more often than you would like to, you can always ask one of the players for a strategy. If you can, find the players that lose to you occasionally or that have a similar level of skill to you.

When you are playing, you should anticipate where the ball will be hit and how many strokes it will take you to get to that ball.

Often, a challenging player will be very strategic and not give you easy points. These players will be using basic strategies such as hitting the ball against your weak side to get easy points. If you are thinking like this, you can anticipate that the ball will be hit to your weak side but you’ve got a trick up your sleeve to compensate. When playing against an experienced player, it is similar to looking for the holes in their strategy.

While it’s not fun to get beaten in a game, don’t let it get the best of you. Instead, use it to learn from your opponent’s strengths, and you will be one step closer to being a seasoned player.
