How Did the Invention of Shin Guards Come About?

In soccer, shin guards are one of the most useful pieces of training equipment. They protect players from other players and the ground, and are the simplest form of protection that guards any part of the body. Many players wear them, although many don’t. Those that do must wear them for safety reasons, and most brands encourage the wearing of them.

Yet this wasn’t true back in the 1850s. Shins are the most common places that people get injured playing soccer, but the idea of wearing protection for them didn’t come into play until the mid-1900s. Before that, there were calls for protection but the idea of what they would look like was not yet invented.

In fact, the idea of protection and the need was first called for in the late 1930s. A soccer reporter, Ernest Edwards, used to be in charge of selecting the teams for England. However, due to injuries, the national team could not gather enough players to complete the usual five players needed and Edwards started to consider the idea of protecting injured players.

His concern grew when there was an injury during the 1938 World Cup. The injured player had legs up to the mid-calf and used to be such a big influence in the game that Edwards believed that it was a lost opportunity that the player had been unable to take part in the match.

How Did Soccer End Up Getting Shin Guards?

Shin guards have held a firm place in sport training and footie for almost a century! During the First World War, soldiers used Shin guards to help make sure players weren’t injured in the most vulnerable part of their leg – the shin bone.

Men playing in military units would also sometimes play shin guard footie matches when they had some free time. They would use the same shin guards that they used during training and battle.

Today, everyone uses shin guards, although not quite like the soldiers during the war. Most of the time, they aren’t much more than an aid to footie training, and not a full-on battle accessory.

Modern Shin Guards and What You Need to Know

There are a few different types of shin guards in addition to the soccer shin guards. Soccer shin guards are attached to the bottoms of players’ socks, and they protect the shins from being kicked by a ball, an opponent’s foot, or a piece of equipment. They are very light and fit tightly, making them easy to wear under socks but still providing a large degree of protection.

Some footballers and athletes from sports like ice hockey also use shin guards, but the ones they use are heavier, covering a lot of the leg, and do not have any socks. Shin guards and soccer shin guards are also not the only pieces of equipment used to protect against injuries. Other protective equipment is used in many different sports.

In soccer, the fact that shin guards are soft and sit on the shins can cause them to disintegrate over time as they wear down. As they wear down, the material will remain in place on the player’s shins. Sometimes this can make a player’s legs too heavy and prevent him from playing, so soccer shin guards are not typically considered to be equipment that should be used over a long period of time.

Why Do Some Soccer Players Decide Not to Use Shin Guards?

Many soccer players do not wear shin guards. It is important to note, however, that this is not something done in ignorance of the health benefits. Some professional and even college players grew up playing in a country or area where players did not wear shin guards. When they reach the adult level, they discover that wearing shin guards is now the norm, and they start to wear them.

These soccer players are among the many that decide to wear the shin guards, but it is done just for training purposes. The idea is that you’ll have less fatigue from kicking when you aren’t wearing shin guards. For soccer games, you should definitely wear shin guards.

Best Soccer Shoes Of All Time

The first soccer shoes appeared in the late 19th century, when they made their first appearance during the English Football Association Challenge Cup. The idea was to protect the players’ feet from the terrain of the pitches and from the studs of the opposing team. However, since the shoes were too heavy, they hindered the players’ speed and agility, and they were soon ruled illegal by the Football Association.

From there, the shoes disappeared, only to reappear in the 70s during the ball boom, also when sports equipment was heavily influenced by bicycle technology. Those soccer shoes were the same as modern day soccer shoes.

The equipment has also evolved over time. The shoes with the most advanced technology are the PUMA evoSPEED WAGS VII, the Adidas F50 adizero, and the Nike Tiempo Legend V.

In the last few decades, soccer shoes have seen a variety of changes. Originally, they were fundamentally designed to be more comfortable. However, today they also need be able to withstand the pressure of running in strange terrains. The best soccer shoes use different materials in the sole, allowing the player to be more comfortable while also improving their performance.

The outsole is the layer that works directly with different terrains, also getting in contact with the ball itself. The main materials used in an outsole are:

Best Soccer Balls In The World

The first soccer balls were probably made of leather, but they were hand sewn and therefore didn’t have a standard size. The original balls were heavy and hard, and therefore unsuitable for kicking. They were also expensive, so most players made their own balls. A ball made with a pig’s bladder had more bounce than a ball made with an animal’s bladder. For this reason, the type of animal from which the bladder was taken determined the quality of the ball. The leather ball was very cumbersome, and therefore the players started looking for more suitable equipment. Sheepskin was commonly used for soccer balls until the end of the 18th century. The balls were not standard in size, but they were as close as possible to the current size. The balls were stitched by hand with leather strips. A layer of leather was also stitched on the outside to make them firmer.
